What is Transvaginal Mesh?

Used in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI), transvaginal mesh is a net-like material that is implanted into women by going through the vagina (transvaginal). In POP surgery, the mesh is stitched into the vaginal wall in order to support falling organs. Whereas, for SUI repair, the mesh is used as a sling and then positioned to elevate the urethra or bladder to prevent incontinence.

Potential Side Effects of Transvaginal Mesh Surgery

Commonly made from synthetic materials, transvaginal mesh is meant to be a permanent solution to pelvic floor disorders. Unfortunately, they are instead being associated with serious complications leading women to remove the devices, including:

  • Mesh protruding from the vaginal opening
  • Mesh erosion, affecting surrounding tissues
  • Perforation of organs or vaginal wall
  • Vaginal scarring
  • Vaginal shrinkage
  • Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Nerve damage causing pain or a loss of feeling
  • Infection
  • Recurrence of POP
  • Excessive bleeding

Due to the seriousness of these complications, there is a high incident rate of transvaginal mesh revision surgery to repair damage done by and remove the mesh. Tissue growth in and around the implant can result in multiple painful surgeries to completely remove it.
